Racial divide.
A very controversial and touching topic to the students,
facilitators and the rector Mr.Jansen who hasn’t been cut any slack by the
media and students of the University of Freestate in all events of the racial scandals. This
is mainly because he has been accused of sweeping these racial scandals which
keep resurfacing under the carpet. And the secrecy and immediate denial of all
events being acts of racial prejudice are what spark rumours and suspicion of
this. It is no secret that racism is an ongoing struggle at this university as
clearly seen by the events which have caught national media attention starting
with the 2008 event at the universities Reitz residence in which students
urinated on the food and forced cleaning staff to eat it; four years later on
the 20th of February fifth year economic
student at the university Dumane Gwebu was admitted to hospital after two white
male students attacked him after having confronted them after they tried drive
over him and a group of three black women
earlier that evening. Yes the
matter was dealt with by the university but; the question at hand is would the
matter have been dealt with the same way if the incident had not received so
much media attention and become national news? In my personal opinion I think
not because after the incident had been reported the accused were allegedly
spotted roaming around campus, until there was media coverage; the university
suddenly became Dumane’s shoulder to cry on. The attack came as no surprise to
me because not enough is being done to promote unity across racial borders;
instead we have forms such as Afriform which promote racial segregation and
deny people of colour the privilege of joining this movement; which I fail to
understand. Is the university ignorant to what is happening in and around the
school? Or does it simply just not care? There is silence once again
surrounding the topic of race; we clearly have a problem which is rooted within
our history; racial segregation is a matter of concern, why are we not vocal
about it? Whose toes do we not want to step on? Then we act surprised when
these incidents keep reoccurring.
